Narrative:
On may/xa/00 approximately XA00, the right (#2) engine lost approximately 80% power. Immediate actions were taken to troubleshoot the problem, but no actions could regain power. The engine was feathered and ATC notified of the problem. During this process, approximately 500 ft of altitude was lost causing descent below the MEA of 8000 ft. Only 7000 ft could be maintained. An emergency was declared and vectors were given by ATC to the nearest airport which had a runway too short for landing. A second vector was given to the thermal airport, which had sufficient runway length. However, no crash fire rescue equipment services were available on the field. Palm springs airport was then chosen as the most suitable to divert to where an uneventful approach and landing was made. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a convair 440 pwred with 2 pratt & whitney R2800 engines. The reporter said the right engine blower failed and the engine was removed and sent to an overhaul shop. The reporter said the aircraft operates in a cargo confign only.

Title: A CONVAIR 440 IN CRUISE AT 8000 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO #2 ENG LOSS OF PWR CAUSED BY ENG BLOWER FAILURE.
Narrative: ON MAY/XA/00 APPROX XA00, THE R (#2) ENG LOST APPROX 80% PWR. IMMEDIATE ACTIONS WERE TAKEN TO TROUBLESHOOT THE PROB, BUT NO ACTIONS COULD REGAIN PWR. THE ENG WAS FEATHERED AND ATC NOTIFIED OF THE PROB. DURING THIS PROCESS, APPROX 500 FT OF ALT WAS LOST CAUSING DSCNT BELOW THE MEA OF 8000 FT. ONLY 7000 FT COULD BE MAINTAINED. AN EMER WAS DECLARED AND VECTORS WERE GIVEN BY ATC TO THE NEAREST ARPT WHICH HAD A RWY TOO SHORT FOR LNDG. A SECOND VECTOR WAS GIVEN TO THE THERMAL ARPT, WHICH HAD SUFFICIENT RWY LENGTH. HOWEVER, NO CFR SVCS WERE AVAILABLE ON THE FIELD. PALM SPRINGS ARPT WAS THEN CHOSEN AS THE MOST SUITABLE TO DIVERT TO WHERE AN UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG WAS MADE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS A CONVAIR 440 PWRED WITH 2 PRATT & WHITNEY R2800 ENGS. THE RPTR SAID THE R ENG BLOWER FAILED AND THE ENG WAS REMOVED AND SENT TO AN OVERHAUL SHOP. THE RPTR SAID THE ACFT OPERATES IN A CARGO CONFIGN ONLY.
