Narrative:

When contacting approach was assigned runway 2R. Briefed and planned runway 2R. Approach turned us on base and asked if we had DC9 traffic. Replied negative. Approach cleared us, roger follow DC9 cleared visual approach. Again replied, that we did not have DC9 traffic. ATC replied cleared visual approach contact tower. Contacted tower for visual approach runway 2R. Tower replied cleared to land runway 2C. Advised unable to make runway 2C and was cleared visual runway 2R. Tower cleared us to land runway 2R. At this time noticed B737 converging from above. RA alert sounded with 800 ft separation. Questioned tower about B737 tower sent B737 around. Landed without incident. Upon arrival at gate called to pull tapes. Tapes showed I was cleared visual runway 2C. Supplemental information from acn 478131: ssw of bna intercepting localizer runway 2R I am first officer PF. Prior to checking in with nashville approach we briefed ILS runway 2C as most probably approach. On check in, while still northeast of bna, we were told to expect visual to runway 2R. Captain asked if we could get runway 2C and approach responded that he would get back to us, but for now plan on runway 2R. We then rebriefed the localizer approach to runway 2R as the GS was down. Brief was thorough and hurried, as we still had plenty of time before executing the approach. Brief included what runway lights to expect on runway 2R. On downwind descending to 2500 ft approach asked if we had a DC9 at our 2 O'clock position in sight, and we responded no. Approach turned us to base and again asked if we had the DC9 in sight. We responded no. He then asked if we had the airport in sight and we responded yes. What I thought I heard then was cleared for the visual approach to runway 2R. I did not hear the captain read back anything different. As we approached the FAF and switched tower, we saw traffic above and to our right apparently turning to intercept runway 2R. On check in with tower, we were cleared to land on runway 2C. Captain responded with unable runway 2C, we were given runway 2R. Tower then cleared us to land on runway 2R. Meanwhile the traffic was now getting very close. Captain queried tower about traffic, and they said we had been cleared for approach to runway 2C and this other aircraft had been cleared short approach to runway 2R. Tower had other aircraft go around. We then landed on runway 2R without incident.

Title: MISUNDERSTANDING OF RWY ASSIGNMENT AND CLRNC RESULTS IN TFC CONFLICT AND GAR AT BNA, TN.

Narrative: WHEN CONTACTING APCH WAS ASSIGNED RWY 2R. BRIEFED AND PLANNED RWY 2R. APCH TURNED US ON BASE AND ASKED IF WE HAD DC9 TFC. REPLIED NEGATIVE. APCH CLRED US, ROGER FOLLOW DC9 CLRED VISUAL APCH. AGAIN REPLIED, THAT WE DID NOT HAVE DC9 TFC. ATC REPLIED CLRED VISUAL APCH CONTACT TWR. CONTACTED TWR FOR VISUAL APCH RWY 2R. TWR REPLIED CLRED TO LAND RWY 2C. ADVISED UNABLE TO MAKE RWY 2C AND WAS CLRED VISUAL RWY 2R. TWR CLRED US TO LAND RWY 2R. AT THIS TIME NOTICED B737 CONVERGING FROM ABOVE. RA ALERT SOUNDED WITH 800 FT SEPARATION. QUESTIONED TWR ABOUT B737 TWR SENT B737 AROUND. LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. UPON ARR AT GATE CALLED TO PULL TAPES. TAPES SHOWED I WAS CLRED VISUAL RWY 2C. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 478131: SSW OF BNA INTERCEPTING LOC RWY 2R I AM FO PF. PRIOR TO CHKING IN WITH NASHVILLE APCH WE BRIEFED ILS RWY 2C AS MOST PROBABLY APCH. ON CHK IN, WHILE STILL NE OF BNA, WE WERE TOLD TO EXPECT VISUAL TO RWY 2R. CAPT ASKED IF WE COULD GET RWY 2C AND APCH RESPONDED THAT HE WOULD GET BACK TO US, BUT FOR NOW PLAN ON RWY 2R. WE THEN REBRIEFED THE LOC APCH TO RWY 2R AS THE GS WAS DOWN. BRIEF WAS THOROUGH AND HURRIED, AS WE STILL HAD PLENTY OF TIME BEFORE EXECUTING THE APCH. BRIEF INCLUDED WHAT RWY LIGHTS TO EXPECT ON RWY 2R. ON DOWNWIND DSNDING TO 2500 FT APCH ASKED IF WE HAD A DC9 AT OUR 2 O'CLOCK POS IN SIGHT, AND WE RESPONDED NO. APCH TURNED US TO BASE AND AGAIN ASKED IF WE HAD THE DC9 IN SIGHT. WE RESPONDED NO. HE THEN ASKED IF WE HAD THE ARPT IN SIGHT AND WE RESPONDED YES. WHAT I THOUGHT I HEARD THEN WAS CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 2R. I DID NOT HEAR THE CAPT READ BACK ANYTHING DIFFERENT. AS WE APCHED THE FAF AND SWITCHED TWR, WE SAW TFC ABOVE AND TO OUR R APPARENTLY TURNING TO INTERCEPT RWY 2R. ON CHK IN WITH TWR, WE WERE CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 2C. CAPT RESPONDED WITH UNABLE RWY 2C, WE WERE GIVEN RWY 2R. TWR THEN CLRED US TO LAND ON RWY 2R. MEANWHILE THE TFC WAS NOW GETTING VERY CLOSE. CAPT QUERIED TWR ABOUT TFC, AND THEY SAID WE HAD BEEN CLRED FOR APCH TO RWY 2C AND THIS OTHER ACFT HAD BEEN CLRED SHORT APCH TO RWY 2R. TWR HAD OTHER ACFT GO AROUND. WE THEN LANDED ON RWY 2R WITHOUT INCIDENT.
