Narrative:

At FL290 and beginning descent, distinct odor detected by crew. Smell similar to burning paper. Oxygen masks donned by crew. Flight engineer believed odor was intensifying. At that time, an emergency was declared to ATC. No smoke, but odor continued. Cleared by ATC, direct to afw for south landing. After landing and exiting runway, aircraft was parked on ramp and met by emergency crew and equipment. Cockpit windows were opened as aircraft was parked and engines shut down. First officer exited window by escape rope. Captain and flight engineer disconnected emergency slide and opened entry door normally and exited the airplane by use of ladder placed by emergency crews. Supplemental information from acn 478807: at FL330, approximately 1 hour prior to landing, the crew noticed an odor similar to burning paper. There was no sign of smoke and the odor disappeared quickly. Later in-flight at FL290 when descent was initiated, the odor returned and intensified. Supplemental information from acn 478804: so opened crew entry door. Captain elected not to deploy slide as odor was dissipating and situation seemed safe.
