Narrative:
We had just departed the gate at alexandria international airport and were cleared to taxi to runway 32. I (the captain) was taxiing and doing the taxi checks, which is standard procedure. I had been to aex before, but did not catch that I had taxied across the runway hold short line at the approach end of runway 32 until my first officer had said something to me. I stopped as soon as I could, but not before the tail of the aircraft was completely past the hold short line. There was no conflict, due to the fact that no one was landing. Plus, the hold short line is a good distance away from the end of the runway. The tower controller did not mention anything to me about taxiing over the line nor did he question my actions. Problem could be solved by having more vigilance outside the aircraft when taxiing. Also, not real sure why the hold short line is so far away from the runway and why it could not be moved closer to the normal distance a hold short line is from a runway.
