Narrative:
After passing gipper (gij), cleared direct to fort wayne (fwa), a 150 degree heading, level at FL230 with a line of numerous thunderstorms between aircraft position and fwa. 150 degree heading, requested deviation to 210 degree heading to avoid thunderstorm (WX). Center cleared deviation right off course and cleared climb to FL330 (filed FL370). Captain turned aircraft to 210 degree heading and initiated climb to FL330. In the climb (at FL250) ZAU asked our altitude. I responded passing FL250 for FL330. ZAU said, 'no, you were not cleared to FL330,' and to, 'stop at FL260.' captain leveled aircraft at FL260. Radio communication was extremely busy with numerous aircraft on the same radio frequency. Everyone was avoiding the same thunderstorms. After we were clear of WX center cleared us to descend to FL230. I feel certain we were cleared to deviate and to climb to FL330 to avoid the thunderstorms.

Narrative: AFTER PASSING GIPPER (GIJ), CLRED DIRECT TO FORT WAYNE (FWA), A 150 DEG HDG, LEVEL AT FL230 WITH A LINE OF NUMEROUS TSTMS BTWN ACFT POS AND FWA. 150 DEG HDG, REQUESTED DEV TO 210 DEG HDG TO AVOID TSTM (WX). CTR CLRED DEV R OFF COURSE AND CLRED CLB TO FL330 (FILED FL370). CAPT TURNED ACFT TO 210 DEG HDG AND INITIATED CLB TO FL330. IN THE CLB (AT FL250) ZAU ASKED OUR ALT. I RESPONDED PASSING FL250 FOR FL330. ZAU SAID, 'NO, YOU WERE NOT CLRED TO FL330,' AND TO, 'STOP AT FL260.' CAPT LEVELED ACFT AT FL260.
