Narrative:
Flying at FL230, we were on course to fly through a build-up of cumulus clouds when we were handed off to mem 127.37. On initial contact, we requested a turn to the south to deviate around the WX. We were eager to get the turn since we were closing quickly on the WX. The deviation was approved. A few mins later, we were queried by mem if we were climbing to FL270. We responded that we were not given that clearance. Mem said the clearance was given on initial contact and gave us a vector and moments later a climb to FL270.
