Narrative:
Maintenance worked on our airplane, which we took out for a flight to chattanooga, tn. All required checklists were performed. We took off from runway 18R in ZZZ, us. We attempted to retract the landing gear after a positive rate of climb was established. The gear didn't retract. We asked for permission to maintain our present heading and altitude to do some troubleshooting. Due to the fact that we weren't able to solve the problem, ZZZ departure control was advised that we would like to return to the airport. Departure control switched us over to approach control, which provided us with vectors for a visual approach, back to runway 18R. The landing occurred without further incident. After maintenance centered our airplane, the landing gear alternate release extension door was found in the open position, which prevented the gear from retracting. Air carrier was notified according to the operations manual.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DEHAVILLAND DASH-8 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH THE LNDG GEAR ALTERNATE EXTENSION DOOR OPEN PREVENTING LNDG GEAR RETRACTION.
Narrative: MAINT WORKED ON OUR AIRPLANE, WHICH WE TOOK OUT FOR A FLT TO CHATTANOOGA, TN. ALL REQUIRED CHKLISTS WERE PERFORMED. WE TOOK OFF FROM RWY 18R IN ZZZ, US. WE ATTEMPTED TO RETRACT THE LNDG GEAR AFTER A POSITIVE RATE OF CLB WAS ESTABLISHED. THE GEAR DIDN'T RETRACT. WE ASKED FOR PERMISSION TO MAINTAIN OUR PRESENT HEADING AND ALT TO DO SOME TROUBLESHOOTING. DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE WEREN'T ABLE TO SOLVE THE PROB, ZZZ DEP CTL WAS ADVISED THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO RETURN TO THE ARPT. DEP CTL SWITCHED US OVER TO APCH CTL, WHICH PROVIDED US WITH VECTORS FOR A VISUAL APCH, BACK TO RWY 18R. THE LNDG OCCURRED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. AFTER MAINT CTRED OUR AIRPLANE, THE LNDG GEAR ALTERNATE RELEASE EXTENSION DOOR WAS FOUND IN THE OPEN POS, WHICH PREVENTED THE GEAR FROM RETRACTING. ACR WAS NOTIFIED ACCORDING TO THE OPS MANUAL.
