Narrative:

Detected smell then visible smoke in cockpit. Removed electrical power (battery to emergency and generators off) and called for 'smoke in cockpit' checklist. Returned to sat. During return, experienced same difficulty communicating with ATC. (Telex headset did not work in 'emergency communication' but sigtronics did.) upon landing, determined that radar unit was the source of smoke. Would suggest a service bulletin on radar unit as manufacturer indicated that this was by no means an isolated incident.
