Narrative:
Runway incursion. Taxiing from parking to runway 28C at intersection south for takeoff (5000 ft remaining), told to hold on intersection south before taxiway east for wbound taxiing commuter, then pass behind and report to tower at #1 spot for takeoff runway 28C, intersection south. Rogered and read back, taxied behind commuter across taxiway east and onto and across runway 28C. Failed to realize short distance between taxiway east (parallel) and runway, and did not see hold short line (if any). Pilot's fault -- despite study of airport layout and understanding of instructions. Ground control very helpful, but I was on the runway (runway 28C at intersection south) before they could react. Suggest ground control hold aircraft on intersection south before crossing taxiway east and switch to tower for takeoff at that location.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF AN SEL SMA INADVERTENTLY TAXIED ACROSS ACTIVE RWY TO WHICH HE WAS INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT.
Narrative: RWY INCURSION. TAXIING FROM PARKING TO RWY 28C AT INTXN S FOR TKOF (5000 FT REMAINING), TOLD TO HOLD ON INTXN S BEFORE TXWY E FOR WBOUND TAXIING COMMUTER, THEN PASS BEHIND AND RPT TO TWR AT #1 SPOT FOR TKOF RWY 28C, INTXN S. ROGERED AND READ BACK, TAXIED BEHIND COMMUTER ACROSS TXWY E AND ONTO AND ACROSS RWY 28C. FAILED TO REALIZE SHORT DISTANCE BTWN TXWY E (PARALLEL) AND RWY, AND DID NOT SEE HOLD SHORT LINE (IF ANY). PLT'S FAULT -- DESPITE STUDY OF ARPT LAYOUT AND UNDERSTANDING OF INSTRUCTIONS. GND CTL VERY HELPFUL, BUT I WAS ON THE RWY (RWY 28C AT INTXN S) BEFORE THEY COULD REACT. SUGGEST GND CTL HOLD ACFT ON INTXN S BEFORE XING TXWY E AND SWITCH TO TWR FOR TKOF AT THAT LOCATION.
