Narrative:
Near runway incursion. Cleared to taxi from ramp via taxiway E2 to taxiway east to runway 10L. Was dark and very early (AB45) get-up. Thought I could get more/all of the runway if I approached from the overrun end, but discovered that I was going to intrude on runway 3/21 if I proceeded any further. Stopped and asked the first officer to clear us with tower just as tower came on to warn us that we were about to encroach runway 3/21. Stopped with nose gear on hold short line. Very close to a runway incursion. Points out -- always know where you are and don't move unless you know, especially in the dark and sleepy pre-dawn.
