Narrative:
On departure from reno runway 16R wagge one llc transition, we were proceeding via a managed FMS departure. However, the captain mistakenly entered the fmg, mustang VOR versus llc transition. Therefore, the aircraft turned 4 mi early and 1800 ft low. ATC saw us turn and gave a vector to rejoin the llc transition. We were above their MVA for the area. After they asked us why we turned early we started investigating by looking at the copied secondary flight plan on the FMS and discovered our mistake. The problem came from both crew members getting complacent and not double-checking the FMS flight plan with the printed SID, in detail. The printed SID was out and being looked at but the fmg and llc transitions are on the same side. With a left turn, they look the same as on the moving map. Still no excuse for not double-checking. I believe that with the flight conditions being VFR contributed to the fact that we didn't notice the early turn because we were both looking outside the aircraft for other traffic in the area. That's still no excuse and it was a real wake up call to the fact that we get to trusting and dependent on the FMS. I know I will be double-checking what's in the computer from now on.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN A320 FLC TURNS OFF THE PUBLISHED WAGGE ONE DEP LLC TRANSITION WHEN THE PIC HAD ENTERED THE FMG TRANSITION INSTEAD, 10 MI S OF RNO, NV.
Narrative: ON DEP FROM RENO RWY 16R WAGGE ONE LLC TRANSITION, WE WERE PROCEEDING VIA A MANAGED FMS DEP. HOWEVER, THE CAPT MISTAKENLY ENTERED THE FMG, MUSTANG VOR VERSUS LLC TRANSITION. THEREFORE, THE ACFT TURNED 4 MI EARLY AND 1800 FT LOW. ATC SAW US TURN AND GAVE A VECTOR TO REJOIN THE LLC TRANSITION. WE WERE ABOVE THEIR MVA FOR THE AREA. AFTER THEY ASKED US WHY WE TURNED EARLY WE STARTED INVESTIGATING BY LOOKING AT THE COPIED SECONDARY FLT PLAN ON THE FMS AND DISCOVERED OUR MISTAKE. THE PROB CAME FROM BOTH CREW MEMBERS GETTING COMPLACENT AND NOT DOUBLE-CHKING THE FMS FLT PLAN WITH THE PRINTED SID, IN DETAIL. THE PRINTED SID WAS OUT AND BEING LOOKED AT BUT THE FMG AND LLC TRANSITIONS ARE ON THE SAME SIDE. WITH A L TURN, THEY LOOK THE SAME AS ON THE MOVING MAP. STILL NO EXCUSE FOR NOT DOUBLE-CHKING. I BELIEVE THAT WITH THE FLT CONDITIONS BEING VFR CONTRIBUTED TO THE FACT THAT WE DIDN'T NOTICE THE EARLY TURN BECAUSE WE WERE BOTH LOOKING OUTSIDE THE ACFT FOR OTHER TFC IN THE AREA. THAT'S STILL NO EXCUSE AND IT WAS A REAL WAKE UP CALL TO THE FACT THAT WE GET TO TRUSTING AND DEPENDENT ON THE FMS. I KNOW I WILL BE DOUBLE-CHKING WHAT'S IN THE COMPUTER FROM NOW ON.
