Narrative:
360 degree heading 4000 ft MSL, box pattern holding by center waiting for thunderstorm to pass fll. TCASII RA, 'climb, climb' with traffic 'pop-up' 200 ft below us. We initiated a climb to 4300 ft and notified ATC. ATC indicated no traffic at that altitude. We again looked back at the TCASII and found him to be 3 mi behind us and 2000 ft below our altitude. We returned to 4000 ft MSL. We believe that the traffic might have been performing acrobatic maneuvers in the area we were holding.
