Narrative:
I was on a VFR flight plan from santa monica to montgomery field. It was only my second time to the san diego proper area. I was going to turn inland at mt soledad but could see that there was an onshore flow at the shoreline. I could see on my terminal area chart that a freeway ran towards and adjacent to montgomery field. I believed I was following that freeway. When I got a visual on an airport I realized I was following a parallel highway that was further inland a few mi. Where I thought I was would have been clear of the class B. At about the same time montgomery tower informed me that the airport I had in sight was miramar naval air station. I was still, I believe, at least 5 mi from miramar when montgomery tower told me to change course and proceeded to montgomery field.
