Narrative:
During climb phase #2 engine overheat light illuminated, thrust lever retarded to idle, light remained illuminated, returned to landing. Emergency declared, precautionary 1-ENG landing accomplished. After landing #2 engine shut down. Emergency crew verified condition of aircraft, so I taxied to gate and deplaned passenger. The 'engine overheat' checklist was not accomplished completely because no other engine indications were noted to be abnormal. Engine shut down without fire bottle being deployed. Later maintenance found overheat loop fault and dispatched aircraft per MEL.

Title: A MEDIUM LARGE TRANSPORT IN CLB AT FL200 DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO #2 ENG OVERHEAT WARNING CAUSED BY A FAILED OVERHEAT SENSOR.
Narrative: DURING CLB PHASE #2 ENG OVERHEAT LIGHT ILLUMINATED, THRUST LEVER RETARDED TO IDLE, LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED, RETURNED TO LNDG. EMER DECLARED, PRECAUTIONARY 1-ENG LNDG ACCOMPLISHED. AFTER LNDG #2 ENG SHUT DOWN. EMER CREW VERIFIED CONDITION OF ACFT, SO I TAXIED TO GATE AND DEPLANED PAX. THE 'ENG OVERHEAT' CHKLIST WAS NOT ACCOMPLISHED COMPLETELY BECAUSE NO OTHER ENG INDICATIONS WERE NOTED TO BE ABNORMAL. ENG SHUT DOWN WITHOUT FIRE BOTTLE BEING DEPLOYED. LATER MAINT FOUND OVERHEAT LOOP FAULT AND DISPATCHED ACFT PER MEL.
