Narrative:
The lavatory smoking detector went off at lavatory 3L. I manually unlocked the door and went inside, finding a passenger smoking. I told him to put it out and give me the cigarette. He put the smoking cigarette in his left pant's pocket, and still refused to give me the lit cigarette and leave the lavatory. I walked out of the lavatory to get assistance. He then closed the lavatory door and kept his hand on the lock so that I couldn't unlock the door. We called the purser and the captain. The captain came to lavatory 3L, but could not get him out. I used a leatherman tool to take off the door. He came out of the lavatory, and we returned to nrt to have him deplaned. The passenger continued to not understand either english or japanese (although he was a japanese national). He returned to his seat and remained quiet. I found at his seat a bottle glen fiddish scotch, which was 3/4 empty. I gave this to the purser to keep as evidence of him drinking. Other passenger nearby said 'he was occasionally drinking from the bottle and talking nonsense to himself. Obviously, he was very unstable.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CABIN ATTENDANT RPT, B777, NRT-SEA. PAX SMOKING IN LAVATORY DIDN'T PUT CIGARETTE OUT, WOULD NOT EXIT LAVATORY. CAPT AND CABIN ATTENDANT TOOK DOOR OFF HINGES. PAX WAS DRINKING FROM OWN BOTTLE. RETURN TO NRT, PAX REMOVED.
Narrative: THE LAVATORY SMOKING DETECTOR WENT OFF AT LAVATORY 3L. I MANUALLY UNLOCKED THE DOOR AND WENT INSIDE, FINDING A PAX SMOKING. I TOLD HIM TO PUT IT OUT AND GIVE ME THE CIGARETTE. HE PUT THE SMOKING CIGARETTE IN HIS L PANT'S POCKET, AND STILL REFUSED TO GIVE ME THE LIT CIGARETTE AND LEAVE THE LAVATORY. I WALKED OUT OF THE LAVATORY TO GET ASSISTANCE. HE THEN CLOSED THE LAVATORY DOOR AND KEPT HIS HAND ON THE LOCK SO THAT I COULDN'T UNLOCK THE DOOR. WE CALLED THE PURSER AND THE CAPT. THE CAPT CAME TO LAVATORY 3L, BUT COULD NOT GET HIM OUT. I USED A LEATHERMAN TOOL TO TAKE OFF THE DOOR. HE CAME OUT OF THE LAVATORY, AND WE RETURNED TO NRT TO HAVE HIM DEPLANED. THE PAX CONTINUED TO NOT UNDERSTAND EITHER ENGLISH OR JAPANESE (ALTHOUGH HE WAS A JAPANESE NATIONAL). HE RETURNED TO HIS SEAT AND REMAINED QUIET. I FOUND AT HIS SEAT A BOTTLE GLEN FIDDISH SCOTCH, WHICH WAS 3/4 EMPTY. I GAVE THIS TO THE PURSER TO KEEP AS EVIDENCE OF HIM DRINKING. OTHER PAX NEARBY SAID 'HE WAS OCCASIONALLY DRINKING FROM THE BOTTLE AND TALKING NONSENSE TO HIMSELF. OBVIOUSLY, HE WAS VERY UNSTABLE.
