Narrative:

Approach gave us a clearance to fly 110 degrees, maintain 4000 ft till established cleared for the ILS runway 8 approach. We were at 180 KTS, flaps 10 degrees. Crossing vny, we configured and noticed that we had a 14 KT tailwind. As we slowed to approach speed, we discussed the wind -- at 500 ft it was still 14 KTS. I asked for IRS (indicated reference speed) winds over the numbers. The tailwind had dissipated. When we arrived at the gate, we realized we were on approach frequency. We called ground and talked with them about it. We also realized that approach control didn't switch us to tower. ILS approach clearance during night VMC, no visibility restrs with a tailwind aloft. We heard approach talking to other aircraft. We just plain missed going to tower.

Title: FLC OF A B737-300 FORGOT TO CONTACT TOWER DUE TO DISTR OF DISCUSSING TAILWIND ON FINAL WITH APCH CTL.

Narrative: APCH GAVE US A CLRNC TO FLY 110 DEGS, MAINTAIN 4000 FT TILL ESTABLISHED CLRED FOR THE ILS RWY 8 APCH. WE WERE AT 180 KTS, FLAPS 10 DEGS. XING VNY, WE CONFIGURED AND NOTICED THAT WE HAD A 14 KT TAILWIND. AS WE SLOWED TO APCH SPD, WE DISCUSSED THE WIND -- AT 500 FT IT WAS STILL 14 KTS. I ASKED FOR IRS (INDICATED REF SPEED) WINDS OVER THE NUMBERS. THE TAILWIND HAD DISSIPATED. WHEN WE ARRIVED AT THE GATE, WE REALIZED WE WERE ON APCH FREQ. WE CALLED GND AND TALKED WITH THEM ABOUT IT. WE ALSO REALIZED THAT APCH CTL DIDN'T SWITCH US TO TWR. ILS APCH CLRNC DURING NIGHT VMC, NO VISIBILITY RESTRS WITH A TAILWIND ALOFT. WE HEARD APCH TALKING TO OTHER ACFT. WE JUST PLAIN MISSED GOING TO TWR.
