Narrative:

Flight plan ord to lax. Approximately 40 mins out of ord, ATC cleared flight direct hec. PF verbally called for direct hec to be selected in FMGC. PNF selected hct, which was on route of flight. Approximately 1 hour later, ZMP asked us to confirm direct hec, at which point we discovered the error. ATC then reclred direct hec. No known traffic conflict. Comments: PNF had only 3 months with company and in type aircraft. PF saw what he wanted to see and didn't check closely the selection.
