Narrative:
Immediately after takeoff, gyro and heading flags at both pilot's and copilot's instruments appeared. All 3 INS units displayed warning lights and blank screen. Placing INS switches to the attitude reference position recovered the gyros and flight was able to continue to destination. Supplemental information from acn 496780: after rotation, gyro, compass, RMI off flags appeared on both captain's and first officer's instruments. All 3 INS units failed, indicating a red warning light. Selecting attitude reference on the msu restored the attitude portion after 30-40 seconds. Continued to destination (sfo) using non-RNAV procedures.
