Narrative:
On orw 2 arrival to bos at 50 mi west of pvd VOR, cleared to descend to FL240 in clear and smooth, but clouds below. I informed flight attendants of possible turbulence on descent and recommended a quick finish to their service and to take their seats. She thanked me for advance notice and stated that she would make the appropriate announcements to the passenger and crew. She did so. It was smooth and clear at FL240. We were cleared to descend to cross pvd at 250 KTS, 11000 ft. We had strong tailwinds. I initiated speed reduction to 290 KTS and descent. At FL230 we encountered severe up- and downdraft and a roll was encountered. The flight attendant in the rear galley, who had been seated with seatbelt on, released her seatbelt to adjust a galley cart lock. She hit the ceiling of the galley and cut her tongue and injured her neck. She was taken to a hospital and released with minor injuries.
