Narrative:
Taxi to runway 23 via taxiway a and taxiway H/Q holding short at taxiway H number 1 in line. Tower said we had to be off ground in 3 min or incur 30 min takeoff delay for ATC. We were awaiting closeout. Just at this point we received closeout over ACARS and I requested runway 23 full length. Tower advised to taxi up and hold short runway 23 on taxiway Q from our current position at taxiway H and Q juncture. At this time we began reviewing closeout data and doing rest checklist as I turned aircraft to align it with taxiway Q center line and pulled up about 1/2 to 3/4 aircraft length beyond taxiway H/Q junction and stopped. At this time tower said, 'air carrier X, stop-stop.' we advised him we had stopped and asked what was the problem. Tower said we pulled past hold short line. We replied that we could see the hold short line out in front of aircraft about 50 ft or so. Tower said it had been painted over, altough we were able to see it clearly in the dark with taxi ligths on out about 50 ft ahead of aircraft. No conflict occurred with landing, or departing aircraft. We were well clear of runway 23 on taxiway Q just beyond the taxiway H and Q junction. No evasive action occurred, or was required. Mishap occurred due to late out of gate and rushing to comply with the 3 min window once we had closeout and checklist to complete so we would not get the 30 min takeoff delay. The painted over hold short line was still clearly visible and misleading even in the dark with only taxi lights on. In the future both pilots must monitor taxi movement jointly to avoid distractions and do checklist and closeout items when time is appropriate and available.

Title: MD80 CREW AT CYYZ TAXIED TO RWY 23 AND HELD SHORT OF OLD HOLD SHORT LINES THAT WERE PAINTED OVER BUT STILL CLEARLY VISIBLE.
Narrative: TAXI TO RWY 23 VIA TXWY A AND TXWY H/Q HOLDING SHORT AT TXWY H NUMBER 1 IN LINE. TWR SAID WE HAD TO BE OFF GND IN 3 MIN OR INCUR 30 MIN TKOF DELAY FOR ATC. WE WERE AWAITING CLOSEOUT. JUST AT THIS POINT WE RECEIVED CLOSEOUT OVER ACARS AND I REQUESTED RWY 23 FULL LENGTH. TWR ADVISED TO TAXI UP AND HOLD SHORT RWY 23 ON TXWY Q FROM OUR CURRENT POS AT TXWY H AND Q JUNCTURE. AT THIS TIME WE BEGAN REVIEWING CLOSEOUT DATA AND DOING REST CHKLIST AS I TURNED ACFT TO ALIGN IT WITH TXWY Q CTR LINE AND PULLED UP ABOUT 1/2 TO 3/4 ACFT LENGTH BEYOND TXWY H/Q JUNCTION AND STOPPED. AT THIS TIME TWR SAID, 'ACR X, STOP-STOP.' WE ADVISED HIM WE HAD STOPPED AND ASKED WHAT WAS THE PROB. TWR SAID WE PULLED PAST HOLD SHORT LINE. WE REPLIED THAT WE COULD SEE THE HOLD SHORT LINE OUT IN FRONT OF ACFT ABOUT 50 FT OR SO. TWR SAID IT HAD BEEN PAINTED OVER, ALTOUGH WE WERE ABLE TO SEE IT CLEARLY IN THE DARK WITH TAXI LIGTHS ON OUT ABOUT 50 FT AHEAD OF ACFT. NO CONFLICT OCCURRED WITH LNDG, OR DEPARTING ACFT. WE WERE WELL CLR OF RWY 23 ON TXWY Q JUST BEYOND THE TXWY H AND Q JUNCTION. NO EVASIVE ACTION OCCURRED, OR WAS REQUIRED. MISHAP OCCURRED DUE TO LATE OUT OF GATE AND RUSHING TO COMPLY WITH THE 3 MIN WINDOW ONCE WE HAD CLOSEOUT AND CHKLIST TO COMPLETE SO WE WOULD NOT GET THE 30 MIN TKOF DELAY. THE PAINTED OVER HOLD SHORT LINE WAS STILL CLEARLY VISIBLE AND MISLEADING EVEN IN THE DARK WITH ONLY TAXI LIGHTS ON. IN THE FUTURE BOTH PLTS MUST MONITOR TAXI MOVEMENT JOINTLY TO AVOID DISTRACTIONS AND DO CHKLIST AND CLOSEOUT ITEMS WHEN TIME IS APPROPRIATE AND AVAILABLE.
