Narrative:

Upon clearing runway 18R at taxiway E4, ground control gave my first officer taxi instructions 'taxiway east to right on taxiway a expect to hold short of runway 5/23.' we could not or didn't see a taxiway 'a' sign. Got up to the hold short line of runway 5/23, stopped -- I queried ATC on taxi instructions. He said 'continue straight ahead' at which I started taxiing straight ahead to cross runway 5/23, 'then 'a' will be on your right or turn right on 'a'.' as I crossed the hold short line but still clear of the runway, we realized we had previously passed taxiway a. Still clear of the runway, I cleared left and right. Traffic for runway 23 was about on a 1 mi final, and I proceeded to expedite clearing the runway. Ground seemed to realize where we were about the time we expedited across the runway, and told us to taxi to the gate via taxiway M.

Narrative: UPON CLRING RWY 18R AT TXWY E4, GND CTL GAVE MY FO TAXI INSTRUCTIONS 'TXWY E TO R ON TXWY A EXPECT TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5/23.' WE COULD NOT OR DIDN'T SEE A TXWY 'A' SIGN. GOT UP TO THE HOLD SHORT LINE OF RWY 5/23, STOPPED -- I QUERIED ATC ON TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. HE SAID 'CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD' AT WHICH I STARTED TAXIING STRAIGHT AHEAD TO CROSS RWY 5/23, 'THEN 'A' WILL BE ON YOUR R OR TURN R ON 'A'.' AS I CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE BUT STILL CLR OF THE RWY, WE REALIZED WE HAD PREVIOUSLY PASSED TXWY A. STILL CLR OF THE RWY, I CLRED L AND R. TFC FOR RWY 23 WAS ABOUT ON A 1 MI FINAL, AND I PROCEEDED TO EXPEDITE CLRING THE RWY. GND SEEMED TO REALIZE WHERE WE WERE ABOUT THE TIME WE EXPEDITED ACROSS THE RWY, AND TOLD US TO TAXI TO THE GATE VIA TXWY M.
