Narrative:

Departed phx to sjc about 80 mi west of bxk. The captain noticed the oil quantity gauge was low. We watched it and it decreased to zero. The captain notified maintenance control and they said, 'if you have normal oil pressure and no lights, continue on.' 10 or so mins later, the oil pressure started to drop and we went to the QRH and followed the procedure and it led to an engine shutdown. We declared an emergency, briefed the passenger and flight attendants. Notified company and returned to phx uneventfully.
