Climbing out of 8000 ft, flight attendants notified cockpit of smoke in cabin. Lavatory smoke detector was sounding. After looking back through cabin, made decision to return to dtw. Flight attendants checked aircraft left lavatory for fire, no fire noticed. As a precaution, put bottle of water in waste basket. Also, they pulled circuit breakers in galley. Emergency return to airport with crash fire rescue equipment standing by. Overweight landing made at 84000 pounds with a smooth touchdown. Cabin was clear of smoke on landing. No further actions were required.

Narrative: CLBING OUT OF 8000 FT, FLT ATTENDANTS NOTIFIED COCKPIT OF SMOKE IN CABIN. LAVATORY SMOKE DETECTOR WAS SOUNDING. AFTER LOOKING BACK THROUGH CABIN, MADE DECISION TO RETURN TO DTW. FLT ATTENDANTS CHKED ACFT L LAVATORY FOR FIRE, NO FIRE NOTICED. AS A PRECAUTION, PUT BOTTLE OF WATER IN WASTE BASKET. ALSO, THEY PULLED CIRCUIT BREAKERS IN GALLEY. EMER RETURN TO ARPT WITH CFR STANDING BY. OVERWT LNDG MADE AT 84000 LBS WITH A SMOOTH TOUCHDOWN. CABIN WAS CLR OF SMOKE ON LNDG. NO FURTHER ACTIONS WERE REQUIRED.
