Narrative:

We were cleared to descend from FL390 to FL330 by ZNY. Going through approximately FL350, center asked us to increase our rate of descent. We were doing about 2000 FPM and increased to approximately 3500 FPM. The altitude select was armed, however, as we neared FL330 at this increased rate of descent, the autoplt had a hard time engaging. By the time we realized that the aircraft wasn't going to level off and turned the autoplt off, we had descended to approximately FL323. We were just leveling off back at FL330 when the controller asked what our altitude was. We said we were level at FL330 and then he cleared us to FL290.

Title: CPR JET OVERSHOT ASSIGNED DSCNT ALT DUE TO NOT TAKING OVER MANUALLY FROM THE AUTOPLT WHICH COULD NOT LEVEL ACFT FROM SUCH A HIGH RATE OF DSCNT REQUESTED BY ATC.

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO DSND FROM FL390 TO FL330 BY ZNY. GOING THROUGH APPROX FL350, CTR ASKED US TO INCREASE OUR RATE OF DSCNT. WE WERE DOING ABOUT 2000 FPM AND INCREASED TO APPROX 3500 FPM. THE ALT SELECT WAS ARMED, HOWEVER, AS WE NEARED FL330 AT THIS INCREASED RATE OF DSCNT, THE AUTOPLT HAD A HARD TIME ENGAGING. BY THE TIME WE REALIZED THAT THE ACFT WASN'T GOING TO LEVEL OFF AND TURNED THE AUTOPLT OFF, WE HAD DSNDED TO APPROX FL323. WE WERE JUST LEVELING OFF BACK AT FL330 WHEN THE CTLR ASKED WHAT OUR ALT WAS. WE SAID WE WERE LEVEL AT FL330 AND THEN HE CLRED US TO FL290.
