Narrative:
We were the last airplane to taxi out of our ramp early in the morning. We were the only aircraft moving on the ground. Our ramp control told us to call ground control at taxiway G. Prior to taxiway G, I commented on the strong winds. A small discussion ensued. We taxied to runway 16L, as we had done the 2 previous nights. When we called the tower ready for takeoff, he mentioned that we should call for a taxi clearance next time. As I said, we were the only aircraft around. There were no conflicts. Distraction by my wind comment caused this situation. I should wait until the first officer calls for taxi before I make any comments.
