Narrative:

On takeoff from runway 3 at lihue airport, at about 200 ft the forward cargo smoke detector activated for about 5 seconds and stopped for about 10 seconds and it went on again for about 5 seconds. Returned to airport for landing. Had emergency equipment standing by. Made normal landing and taxied off on taxiway D and had crash fire rescue equipment check forward cargo bin for smoke. No smoke found. Taxied and terminated emergency. Found out later that the forward cargo bin was open. There was no indications in the cockpit that the door was open when performing the taxi and takeoff checklists.

Narrative: ON TKOF FROM RWY 3 AT LIHUE ARPT, AT ABOUT 200 FT THE FORWARD CARGO SMOKE DETECTOR ACTIVATED FOR ABOUT 5 SECONDS AND STOPPED FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS AND IT WENT ON AGAIN FOR ABOUT 5 SECONDS. RETURNED TO ARPT FOR LNDG. HAD EMER EQUIP STANDING BY. MADE NORMAL LNDG AND TAXIED OFF ON TXWY D AND HAD CFR CHK FORWARD CARGO BIN FOR SMOKE. NO SMOKE FOUND. TAXIED AND TERMINATED EMER. FOUND OUT LATER THAT THE FORWARD CARGO BIN WAS OPEN. THERE WAS NO INDICATIONS IN THE COCKPIT THAT THE DOOR WAS OPEN WHEN PERFORMING THE TAXI AND TKOF CHKLISTS.
