Narrative:
Departure was rushed to make schedule departure XA57 from lax-ewr. Computer fpr was J96 from drk VOR to gup VOR. However, ATC clearance was via J10, drk VOR to fmn VOR. Early morning rush to make scheduled departure and improper oversight by me as PIC. Original flight plan should have been X'ed out or destroyed, so as not to accidentally revert to planned route. On computer flight plan instead of actual cleared route. First officer was very experienced and I had complete trust that he was capable of loading correct waypoints, but both first officer and myself failed to use a visible method of marking the computer flight plan. Greater than 99% of the time the cleared route is the same as the computer flight plan. But not always -- as I found out the hard way. ATC was very nice and caught my error. Possible contributing factor was being sleepy at early call for XA57 departure, no breakfast and not as alert as if later departure. End of week of night/day mixed cargo flts which sleep was difficult. This will never happen to me again. I won't permit it.
