Narrative:
From approximately 14 mi north of dsd VOR, cleared by ZSE 'direct bodey, maintain 7000 ft till established, cleared ILS runway 22 at redmond.' I proceeded toward bodey OM at 7000 ft, ADF indicated station passage and ILS runway 22 localizer was 'off the peg.' started turn outbound and began descent to 6500 ft as indicated on the redmond, or, ILS runway 22 approach profile. ZSE then queried me as to position, then corrected me by saying I was still 6 mi north of bodey. At that point I was at approximately 6700 ft. ZSE instructed me to climb to 7700 ft (MVA) and provided vectors for the straight in on ILS runway 22. No other incident. I suspect the following: ADF was wrong in indicating station passage 6 mi north. (Precipitation static?) localizer 'off peg' was probably a false localizer side lobe signal.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMT PLT HAD ALT EXCURSION ON APCH AT RDM.
Narrative: FROM APPROX 14 MI N OF DSD VOR, CLRED BY ZSE 'DIRECT BODEY, MAINTAIN 7000 FT TILL ESTABLISHED, CLRED ILS RWY 22 AT REDMOND.' I PROCEEDED TOWARD BODEY OM AT 7000 FT, ADF INDICATED STATION PASSAGE AND ILS RWY 22 LOC WAS 'OFF THE PEG.' STARTED TURN OUTBOUND AND BEGAN DSCNT TO 6500 FT AS INDICATED ON THE REDMOND, OR, ILS RWY 22 APCH PROFILE. ZSE THEN QUERIED ME AS TO POS, THEN CORRECTED ME BY SAYING I WAS STILL 6 MI N OF BODEY. AT THAT POINT I WAS AT APPROX 6700 FT. ZSE INSTRUCTED ME TO CLB TO 7700 FT (MVA) AND PROVIDED VECTORS FOR THE STRAIGHT IN ON ILS RWY 22. NO OTHER INCIDENT. I SUSPECT THE FOLLOWING: ADF WAS WRONG IN INDICATING STATION PASSAGE 6 MI N. (PRECIPITATION STATIC?) LOC 'OFF PEG' WAS PROBABLY A FALSE LOC SIDE LOBE SIGNAL.
