Narrative:
ATC clearance, ground and local were all combined. We called ready for taxi and ATC cleared us 'to holding point 24.' upon reaching the holding point for runway 24, the PNF called 'aircraft X ready.' ATC responded 'position.' PNF read back 'into position.' we then taxied into position on runway 24. As I taxied onto the runway, I observed an airplane on final approach approximately 4-5 mi out with its landing lights on. While holding on the runway, ATC told the aircraft on final to go around. ATC asked us why we were on the runway and we advised them that we thought they had told us to taxi 'into position.' ATC said he had told us to 'hold position' -- although that is not what we heard or read back. This incident occurred for a couple of reasons: 1) difficulty in understanding foreign nationals speaking english when it is not their native tongue. 2) difficulty for foreign nationals to understand english spoken by english speaking crews. 3) differences in phraseology between ICAO and FAA, particularly for crews used to flying primarily in the united states, ie, FAA phraseology 'taxi into position and hold,' ICAO phraseology 'line up and wait.' 4) pressure to make slot times in europe, ie, 10 mins from engine start to takeoff time puts a lot of pressure on the crew and ATC to hurry things up and not be as careful in questioning clrncs and readbacks.
