Narrative:

On slam dunk arrival to cqy. Visual approach to runway 17C at dfw. Captain allowed aircraft to transgress west into runway 18L approach path. Received TCASII TA from MD80 approaching runway 18R. Dfw tower advised to return to approach path for runway 17C. Crew complied and completed successful approach and landing. No further comment from ATC. We agreed that the PF lost situational awareness due to trying to descend and slow aircraft. Flew straight through localizer rapidly without seeing CDI or airport terminal. Poor inside and outside xchk due to preoccupation with speed, descent, checklist. PNF, first officer, failed to say anything due to 'awe of rank' and was not believing what he was seeing. He said he had triple-checked the localizer frequency. He was about to speak up when TCASII TA occurred. Also crew was too much absorbed inside cockpit. Flight engineer was absorbed with completing before landing check due to rapid descent and had also lost situational awareness. All 3 are somewhat passive individuals and had too much confidence in each other. WX was not a factor and this tended to increase everyone's confidence. Although the approach was properly briefed and all available navaids were tuned and idented, they were not properly used by crew. Event happened early so approach was stable by 500 ft, but safety was compromised due to crew not backing each other up. Lesson learned: don't get complacent just because other person is PF. Divide attention as all pilots should.

Title: A B727 CAPT ADMITTED OVERSHOOTING THE LOC ON A PARALLEL APCH INTO DFW CAUSING A TA.

Narrative: ON SLAM DUNK ARR TO CQY. VISUAL APCH TO RWY 17C AT DFW. CAPT ALLOWED ACFT TO TRANSGRESS W INTO RWY 18L APCH PATH. RECEIVED TCASII TA FROM MD80 APCHING RWY 18R. DFW TWR ADVISED TO RETURN TO APCH PATH FOR RWY 17C. CREW COMPLIED AND COMPLETED SUCCESSFUL APCH AND LNDG. NO FURTHER COMMENT FROM ATC. WE AGREED THAT THE PF LOST SITUATIONAL AWARENESS DUE TO TRYING TO DSND AND SLOW ACFT. FLEW STRAIGHT THROUGH LOC RAPIDLY WITHOUT SEEING CDI OR ARPT TERMINAL. POOR INSIDE AND OUTSIDE XCHK DUE TO PREOCCUPATION WITH SPD, DSCNT, CHKLIST. PNF, FO, FAILED TO SAY ANYTHING DUE TO 'AWE OF RANK' AND WAS NOT BELIEVING WHAT HE WAS SEEING. HE SAID HE HAD TRIPLE-CHKED THE LOC FREQ. HE WAS ABOUT TO SPEAK UP WHEN TCASII TA OCCURRED. ALSO CREW WAS TOO MUCH ABSORBED INSIDE COCKPIT. FE WAS ABSORBED WITH COMPLETING BEFORE LNDG CHK DUE TO RAPID DSCNT AND HAD ALSO LOST SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. ALL 3 ARE SOMEWHAT PASSIVE INDIVIDUALS AND HAD TOO MUCH CONFIDENCE IN EACH OTHER. WX WAS NOT A FACTOR AND THIS TENDED TO INCREASE EVERYONE'S CONFIDENCE. ALTHOUGH THE APCH WAS PROPERLY BRIEFED AND ALL AVAILABLE NAVAIDS WERE TUNED AND IDENTED, THEY WERE NOT PROPERLY USED BY CREW. EVENT HAPPENED EARLY SO APCH WAS STABLE BY 500 FT, BUT SAFETY WAS COMPROMISED DUE TO CREW NOT BACKING EACH OTHER UP. LESSON LEARNED: DON'T GET COMPLACENT JUST BECAUSE OTHER PERSON IS PF. DIVIDE ATTN AS ALL PLTS SHOULD.
