Narrative:

Engine #1 failed at FL280. There was no abnormal indications prior to failure. At the time of the failure, itt rose into red, followed by a 'puff' of smoke in cockpit. Itt decreased and smoke cleared. Crew followed all QRH's and checklists, declared an emergency and diverted to cmh. (Original flight plan was rdu to cle.) we landed in cmh with no further incident. There were no injuries or fatalities. Maintenance found pieces of metal in the bottom of thrust reverser #1. Their conclusion was that the aircraft might have 'thrown' a blade. There was no final conclusion because the engine seized so hard they could not open the engine.
