Narrative:
In my haste to secure an on-time departure, I prematurely released the parking brake without the pushback mechanic's concurrence. When I called him on the interphone to release the brakes I was expecting his answer to be yes but his response was not until pushback clearance was received. I delayed our departure just a few mins to accommodate some non revenue employee travelers against the agent's wishes. This brake release early occurred because I was trying to secure an on-time departure while filling up all the seats. I could have better utilized my resources to prevent this situation. At no time did the aircraft move prematurely and I immediately set the parking brake when I realized my error. I believe shortcutting SOP's is never worth it to save time and I won't allow myself to be in this hurry up mode again during pushback.
