Narrative:
I noticed an unusual amount of large bags being loaded into the aft cargo compartment and questioned the ramp personnel when the bag loading sheet only showed 3 heavy bags. (A heavy bag is over 50 pounds.) the ramp personnel assured me that the bag count was correct. When we arrived in iad, I had the rampers recount the bags, and there was at least 12 heavy bags. Based on this new count, we left the gate at jfk overweight and out of aft center of gravity limits. I have brought this to the attention of our chief pilot and company.
