Narrative:
I was teaching takeoffs and lndgs in the traffic pattern at venice. After takeoff for closed traffic, I turned onto the crosswind leg, and did not observe any other aircraft on the downwind leg or entering the downwind leg. I proceeded to turn downwind. I made a radio call on both the crosswind leg and entering the downwind leg. I heard an aircraft announce being on the downwind leg, and when I looked behind me, I saw a C172 almost on top of me. I dove to avoid the plane. I tried to get him to answer me on the CTAF, but the plane wouldn't answer. Both of us should have been more vigilant looking out for other aircraft. He should have been paying more attention to the radio and heard myself announcing of my position.
