Narrative:

Went on duty for reserve at XA00Z. Assigned trip ewr-mco-ewr. On flight xyy, mco-ewr, we held due to WX in ewr for approximately 1.5 hours. Diverted into orf. Ewr went into a ground stop situation update at XO00Z. We were refiled as flight xyz, orf-ewr with a scheduled flight time of XG54. Orf operations needed our gate, so I agreed to push back in case the ground stop was lifted to be in position to take off. At XO00Z the update on the ground stop was extended to XP00Z. Since my duty time limitation of XQ00Z was approaching, I felt that given the situation, there was no way to complete the flight to ewr, without violating my maximum duty day limitation, and elected to return to the gate. I notified both the coordinator and orf operations.

Title: B737-700 CREW WAS PROJECTED TO EXCEED MAX DUTY TIME. FLT RETURNED TO THE GATE AND WAS CANCELED.

ORF OPS NEEDED OUR GATE, SO I AGREED TO PUSH BACK IN CASE THE GND STOP WAS LIFTED TO BE IN POS TO TAKE OFF. AT XO00Z THE UPDATE ON THE GND STOP WAS EXTENDED TO XP00Z. SINCE MY DUTY TIME LIMITATION OF XQ00Z WAS APCHING, I FELT THAT GIVEN THE SIT, THERE WAS NO WAY TO COMPLETE THE FLT TO EWR, WITHOUT VIOLATING MY MAX DUTY DAY LIMITATION, AND ELECTED TO RETURN TO THE GATE. I NOTIFIED BOTH THE COORDINATOR AND ORF OPS.
