Narrative:
Took off from rochester, nh, and in contact with manchester approach control. Climbed to 3000 ft with instructions to go to lwm VOR then to bvy -- our destination. Asked for direct bvy. Controller replied 'you are cleared direct bvy for the visual approach, contact bos approach on 124.4.' we replied 'direct beverly cleared for visual, leaving 3000 ft for 2000 ft,' then called bos on 124.4. They questioned altitude. We were asked to contact mht. Repeated our instructions and he said we weren't cleared for approach. Called mht on ground. They pulled the tapes. Controller called back with an apology and relieved the acting controller from duty. He had cleared us for visual before contacting bos.
