Narrative:

We were flying IFR on training trip from luk to lex for a practice ILS and return to luk. We were xferred to lex approach and called in. Then somehow, the radio volume to lex approach was decreased, so we could not hear them. Because we had been informed that we would use ILS runway 4, I did not realize the volume was out until it appeared they should be giving us a vector -- 30 NM or so. There was a NOTAM in effect that required us to monitor 121.5 if we had 2 radios. I knew of the NOTAM but thought it was advised. The controller was not happy when we signed back in.
