Narrative:
My wife and I were traveling from abilene, tx, to jeffco airport, boulder, co, VFR and flight following and were in contact with cos approach, heading nnw and were near the black forest VOR. My wife suddenly noticed an aircraft approaching from the west, heading east. By the time I responded to her that I saw the traffic, he was already at my 11 O'clock position and approximately 100 ft above us. He passed approximately 300 ft in front, and it all happened so fast that we had no time to get a tail number. It was a 'boldly' painted, high wing cessna, possibly a C172. We were both shaken, and I immediately contacted cos approach and asked if he knew about the traffic. He responded that the traffic was now behind us and no factor -- little satisfaction for us. Even if he were not in contact with the traffic, we feel as though he should have informed us of their proximity.

Title: AN SMA VFR PLT, WHILE IN LEVEL FLT, HAD AN NMAC WITH AN OPPOSITE DIRECTION SMALL ACFT.
Narrative: MY WIFE AND I WERE TRAVELING FROM ABILENE, TX, TO JEFFCO ARPT, BOULDER, CO, VFR AND FLT FOLLOWING AND WERE IN CONTACT WITH COS APCH, HDG NNW AND WERE NEAR THE BLACK FOREST VOR. MY WIFE SUDDENLY NOTICED AN ACFT APCHING FROM THE W, HDG E. BY THE TIME I RESPONDED TO HER THAT I SAW THE TFC, HE WAS ALREADY AT MY 11 O'CLOCK POS AND APPROX 100 FT ABOVE US. HE PASSED APPROX 300 FT IN FRONT, AND IT ALL HAPPENED SO FAST THAT WE HAD NO TIME TO GET A TAIL NUMBER. IT WAS A 'BOLDLY' PAINTED, HIGH WING CESSNA, POSSIBLY A C172. WE WERE BOTH SHAKEN, AND I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED COS APCH AND ASKED IF HE KNEW ABOUT THE TFC. HE RESPONDED THAT THE TFC WAS NOW BEHIND US AND NO FACTOR -- LITTLE SATISFACTION FOR US. EVEN IF HE WERE NOT IN CONTACT WITH THE TFC, WE FEEL AS THOUGH HE SHOULD HAVE INFORMED US OF THEIR PROX.
