Narrative:
We were on the polar arrival into dtw. Before the descent checklist, we briefed for the ILS runway 22R. This was the most logical for an arrival from the west. At approximately 20 mi west of flint VOR, cle center gave us a short cut vector to intercept the dtw 343 degree radial and later was told to expect runway 21L. We re-briefed for the runway 21L approach. When handed over to dtw approach, we were given a couple of vectors along with one to intercept 'the localizer.' we were aligned on the centerline of runway 21L when approach gave us a vector to 're-intercept.' I informed him we were right on the centerline. He said runway 22R not runway 21L. We intercepted runway 22R without incident. I told approach that we were told to expect runway 21L and had no further instructions to the contrary. Dtw approach should have given us the runway number with the 'intercept the localizer' clearance.
