Narrative:

I was flying with a new captain. He was taxiing for departure and the before takeoff checklist was not complete when the tower cleared him for takeoff on runway 36L (clt) with a landing aircraft on a 2 1/2 mi right base to runway 36L. He decided there was enough time to continue the before takeoff checklist and decided not to take off, but slightly exceeded the hold short line.

Narrative: I WAS FLYING WITH A NEW CAPT. HE WAS TAXIING FOR DEP AND THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST WAS NOT COMPLETE WHEN THE TWR CLRED HIM FOR TKOF ON RWY 36L (CLT) WITH A LNDG ACFT ON A 2 1/2 MI R BASE TO RWY 36L. HE DECIDED THERE WAS ENOUGH TIME TO CONTINUE THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST AND DECIDED NOT TO TAKE OFF, BUT SLIGHTLY EXCEEDED THE HOLD SHORT LINE.
