Narrative:
Landed on runway 36R at clt just after dusk. Exited the runway on taxiway 'microphone' tower told us to give way to a dash 8 on 'charlie' and proceed to the ramp. I looked ahead and also to the right, but didn't see anything. The captain was moving on 'microphone' to clear the runway and he saw an erj (embraer rj) and thought maybe that was the traffic. He moved slightly ahead and then to his left saw a dash 8 stopped on taxiway 'charlie' with no taxi light on and painted dark blue so it was very difficult to see. The problem here was that there is never traffic coming down 'charlie' like that when runway 36R is in use. It is customary for them to use taxiway 'right or G' to cross runway 23. It is a very short distance between runway 36R and taxiway charlie so to completely clear the runway on microphone you almost have to project onto charlie. Like I said this is an untypical occurrence, but it sure made our hearts jump into our throats when we saw the dash 8 stopped just off our left wing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-400 FLC SURPRISED TO SEE A DE HAVILLAND DASH 8 HOLDING WITHOUT LIGHTS ON THE TXWY ON WHICH RPTR WAS ASSIGNED TO PARKING.
Narrative: LANDED ON RWY 36R AT CLT JUST AFTER DUSK. EXITED THE RWY ON TXWY 'MIKE' TWR TOLD US TO GIVE WAY TO A DASH 8 ON 'CHARLIE' AND PROCEED TO THE RAMP. I LOOKED AHEAD AND ALSO TO THE R, BUT DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING. THE CAPT WAS MOVING ON 'MIKE' TO CLR THE RWY AND HE SAW AN ERJ (EMBRAER RJ) AND THOUGHT MAYBE THAT WAS THE TFC. HE MOVED SLIGHTLY AHEAD AND THEN TO HIS L SAW A DASH 8 STOPPED ON TXWY 'CHARLIE' WITH NO TAXI LIGHT ON AND PAINTED DARK BLUE SO IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE. THE PROB HERE WAS THAT THERE IS NEVER TFC COMING DOWN 'CHARLIE' LIKE THAT WHEN RWY 36R IS IN USE. IT IS CUSTOMARY FOR THEM TO USE TXWY 'R OR G' TO CROSS RWY 23. IT IS A VERY SHORT DISTANCE BETWEEN RWY 36R AND TXWY CHARLIE SO TO COMPLETELY CLR THE RWY ON MIKE YOU ALMOST HAVE TO PROJECT ONTO CHARLIE. LIKE I SAID THIS IS AN UNTYPICAL OCCURRENCE, BUT IT SURE MADE OUR HEARTS JUMP INTO OUR THROATS WHEN WE SAW THE DASH 8 STOPPED JUST OFF OUR L WING.
