Narrative:
Flight X level at 13000 ft MSL (us) and company flight Y level at 13000 ft MSL. ZAU told flight Y to descend to 10000 ft MSL, expedite, maintain 300 KIAS. Flight X read back clearance and started to descend to 10000 ft MSL. We heard center call flight Y again, to confirm their clearance and realized it wasn't our clearance so we stopped our descent at 12700 ft and climbed back up to 13000 ft MSL. Center never called us about our deviation. Too much traffic and long call signs and fatigue contributed to this situation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727 CARGO CREW INITIALLY ACCEPTS THE DSCNT CLRNC READ TO A COMPANY FLT AT THE SAME ALT WITH A SIMILAR SOUNDING CALL SIGN NEAR JVL, WI.
Narrative: FLT X LEVEL AT 13000 FT MSL (US) AND COMPANY FLT Y LEVEL AT 13000 FT MSL. ZAU TOLD FLT Y TO DSND TO 10000 FT MSL, EXPEDITE, MAINTAIN 300 KIAS. FLT X READ BACK CLRNC AND STARTED TO DSND TO 10000 FT MSL. WE HEARD CTR CALL FLT Y AGAIN, TO CONFIRM THEIR CLRNC AND REALIZED IT WASN'T OUR CLRNC SO WE STOPPED OUR DSCNT AT 12700 FT AND CLBED BACK UP TO 13000 FT MSL. CTR NEVER CALLED US ABOUT OUR DEV. TOO MUCH TFC AND LONG CALL SIGNS AND FATIGUE CONTRIBUTED TO THIS SIT.
