Narrative:
On preflight walkaround, I discovered the left pack diverter door not deployed. Contacted dispatch to be xferred to maintenance and was disconnected. Called maintenance direct. The controller had me defer the item in the logbook with MEL approval. Upon looking at the MEL item, I noticed that several maintenance items needed to be accomplished to defer the diverter. Maintenance was notified again and off-line maintenance was called to defer the item. After all this was completed we departed for ord. Shortly after takeoff we received a new flight release from dispatch. It turns out that the diverter door was an item that affected flight performance and dispatch had not been notified of the deferral. This coordination has got to happen. I will now always go through dispatch to get to maintenance and keep them on the line until we know if the item is an item that affects flight performance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-300 CREW HAD A DEFERRED MEL ITEM WHICH HAD FLT RESTRS WHICH WERE NOT APPLIED.
Narrative: ON PREFLT WALKAROUND, I DISCOVERED THE L PACK DIVERTER DOOR NOT DEPLOYED. CONTACTED DISPATCH TO BE XFERRED TO MAINT AND WAS DISCONNECTED. CALLED MAINT DIRECT. THE CTLR HAD ME DEFER THE ITEM IN THE LOGBOOK WITH MEL APPROVAL. UPON LOOKING AT THE MEL ITEM, I NOTICED THAT SEVERAL MAINT ITEMS NEEDED TO BE ACCOMPLISHED TO DEFER THE DIVERTER. MAINT WAS NOTIFIED AGAIN AND OFF-LINE MAINT WAS CALLED TO DEFER THE ITEM. AFTER ALL THIS WAS COMPLETED WE DEPARTED FOR ORD. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF WE RECEIVED A NEW FLT RELEASE FROM DISPATCH. IT TURNS OUT THAT THE DIVERTER DOOR WAS AN ITEM THAT AFFECTED FLT PERFORMANCE AND DISPATCH HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE DEFERRAL. THIS COORD HAS GOT TO HAPPEN. I WILL NOW ALWAYS GO THROUGH DISPATCH TO GET TO MAINT AND KEEP THEM ON THE LINE UNTIL WE KNOW IF THE ITEM IS AN ITEM THAT AFFECTS FLT PERFORMANCE.
