Narrative:

While taxiing on taxiway a to runway 30L (msp) we received our weight and balance about A3. Therefore, while #1 and holding short, we were still completing the final checklists. With 3 aircraft visible on final, the 2 gaps appeared sufficient for our departure. During our final checklist, as the first aircraft was in the flare, I thought I heard 'cleared into position and be ready.' while taxiing into position, we finished the final (before takeoff) checklist. After being ready for a few seconds, tower instructed the rollout aircraft to exit as soon as possible and told us to quickly taxi clear of the runway. After clearing back onto taxiway a, the second aircraft landed and we were cleared for takeoff. When later informed that we misheard the initial clearance, we assume the following: 1) the clearance was 'cleared up to and hold short, be ready.' since we were already #1, holding short, this was misheard to be what was expected. 2) while doing the checklist challenge and response, we obviously misheard or didn't hear the clearance accurately. The solution shall be that since late reception of weight and balance information will occur more often now (with the advent of bag match procedures), we will not enter the ready position or communicate with tower with the intention of going into position until all checklists are complete and all the pilots' attention are directed toward those critically important clrncs from tower. Additionally, during debrief, we were informed that there was never any loss of separation.

Title: DC10-30 FLC MISTAKENLY TAXIED INTO POS AND HELD AFTER HEARING WHAT THEY EXPECTED TO HEAR SINCE THEY WERE #1 FOR TKOF.

Narrative: WHILE TAXIING ON TXWY A TO RWY 30L (MSP) WE RECEIVED OUR WT AND BAL ABOUT A3. THEREFORE, WHILE #1 AND HOLDING SHORT, WE WERE STILL COMPLETING THE FINAL CHKLISTS. WITH 3 ACFT VISIBLE ON FINAL, THE 2 GAPS APPEARED SUFFICIENT FOR OUR DEP. DURING OUR FINAL CHKLIST, AS THE FIRST ACFT WAS IN THE FLARE, I THOUGHT I HEARD 'CLRED INTO POS AND BE READY.' WHILE TAXIING INTO POS, WE FINISHED THE FINAL (BEFORE TKOF) CHKLIST. AFTER BEING READY FOR A FEW SECONDS, TWR INSTRUCTED THE ROLLOUT ACFT TO EXIT ASAP AND TOLD US TO QUICKLY TAXI CLR OF THE RWY. AFTER CLRING BACK ONTO TXWY A, THE SECOND ACFT LANDED AND WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. WHEN LATER INFORMED THAT WE MISHEARD THE INITIAL CLRNC, WE ASSUME THE FOLLOWING: 1) THE CLRNC WAS 'CLRED UP TO AND HOLD SHORT, BE READY.' SINCE WE WERE ALREADY #1, HOLDING SHORT, THIS WAS MISHEARD TO BE WHAT WAS EXPECTED. 2) WHILE DOING THE CHKLIST CHALLENGE AND RESPONSE, WE OBVIOUSLY MISHEARD OR DIDN'T HEAR THE CLRNC ACCURATELY. THE SOLUTION SHALL BE THAT SINCE LATE RECEPTION OF WT AND BAL INFO WILL OCCUR MORE OFTEN NOW (WITH THE ADVENT OF BAG MATCH PROCS), WE WILL NOT ENTER THE READY POS OR COMMUNICATE WITH TWR WITH THE INTENTION OF GOING INTO POS UNTIL ALL CHKLISTS ARE COMPLETE AND ALL THE PLTS' ATTN ARE DIRECTED TOWARD THOSE CRITICALLY IMPORTANT CLRNCS FROM TWR. ADDITIONALLY, DURING DEBRIEF, WE WERE INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NEVER ANY LOSS OF SEPARATION.
