Narrative:
Ground cleared us to taxi to runway 4 and hold at taxiway C. We complied. When arriving at taxiway C, we advised ground we would be delayed due to an aircraft problem. Approximately 10 mins later, we called tower ready to go. Tower cleared us to taxi up to and hold short of runway 4. We taxied past taxiway C to next intersection (on 10-9 page, runway 4/22 overrun seemed to be at this intersection) and held short of runway 4. There were hold lines and a sign that read 'approach 4.' tower called and told us to turn right and go back to taxiway C. Had we done that, we would have turned onto overrun for runway 4/22. We called and suggested left u-turn back to taxiway C. Tower agreed. Tower apparently wanted us to taxi onto taxiway C and hold short of runway 4 rather than use next intersection.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-500 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT ELP, TAXIED PAST A POINT WHERE ATC HAD CLRED THEM.
Narrative: GND CLRED US TO TAXI TO RWY 4 AND HOLD AT TXWY C. WE COMPLIED. WHEN ARRIVING AT TXWY C, WE ADVISED GND WE WOULD BE DELAYED DUE TO AN ACFT PROB. APPROX 10 MINS LATER, WE CALLED TWR READY TO GO. TWR CLRED US TO TAXI UP TO AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 4. WE TAXIED PAST TXWY C TO NEXT INTXN (ON 10-9 PAGE, RWY 4/22 OVERRUN SEEMED TO BE AT THIS INTXN) AND HELD SHORT OF RWY 4. THERE WERE HOLD LINES AND A SIGN THAT READ 'APCH 4.' TWR CALLED AND TOLD US TO TURN R AND GO BACK TO TXWY C. HAD WE DONE THAT, WE WOULD HAVE TURNED ONTO OVERRUN FOR RWY 4/22. WE CALLED AND SUGGESTED L U-TURN BACK TO TXWY C. TWR AGREED. TWR APPARENTLY WANTED US TO TAXI ONTO TXWY C AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 4 RATHER THAN USE NEXT INTXN.
