Narrative:

ZME cleared our aircraft to FL310 initially. About 5 mins later, ZME called traffic at FL290. I responded 'climbing to FL310.' I saw the traffic pass overhead. We were already at FL284. We were air carrier X abcd, and air carrier X aecf had received the initial clearance to stop at FL280. I believe there was a mix-up in call signs. Moments after this problem, a different controller came on the frequency. We were blessed to have not had a midair with aircraft Y at FL290.
