Narrative:

We were descending to 7000 ft on the northeast arrival into mci. Out of about 8000 ft we were given a primary target at 12:30 to 1:30 O'clock position. We both looked and saw nothing at our altitude and position. I was still checking for the traffic out of about 7500 ft when I saw a white or cream colored C172 or C182 at 12 O'clock and we were descending into them. I called the traffic and we made an extreme pull up to miss him. I estimate our clearance at less than 100 ft. We reported the near miss to ZKC and then were changed over to mci approach control. I don't think we would have come near as close if the primary target had had an altitude reporting transponder.
