Narrative:
ATC instructed air carrier X to turn left 15 degrees, very shortly thereafter, we were told to stop climb at FL270. We had been previously cleared to FL280. Instruction to stop climb at FL270 was given too late to be able to comply. ATC was notified that we would top of at FL280 and then descend to FL270. ATC reclred us to FL280. This all took place within less than 30 seconds. With each change the altitude window was reset and open climb or descent was initiated. Aircraft software FMS programming was unable to keep us with ATC's last min demands. I disconnected autoplt and leveled off at FL280. Leveloff transition topped off above FL280 by about 200 ft. Recommend ATC be instructed on practical limits of modern high tech aircraft and plan accordingly.

Title: A321 FLC OVERSHOT AMENDED CLRNC ALT BY ARTCC RADAR CTLR DUE TO THE LATE TIMING OF THEIR CLRNC SINCE THEY WERE ALREADY CLBING THROUGH THAT ALT.
Narrative: ATC INSTRUCTED ACR X TO TURN L 15 DEGS, VERY SHORTLY THEREAFTER, WE WERE TOLD TO STOP CLB AT FL270. WE HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY CLRED TO FL280. INSTRUCTION TO STOP CLB AT FL270 WAS GIVEN TOO LATE TO BE ABLE TO COMPLY. ATC WAS NOTIFIED THAT WE WOULD TOP OF AT FL280 AND THEN DSND TO FL270. ATC RECLRED US TO FL280. THIS ALL TOOK PLACE WITHIN LESS THAN 30 SECONDS. WITH EACH CHANGE THE ALT WINDOW WAS RESET AND OPEN CLB OR DSCNT WAS INITIATED. ACFT SOFTWARE FMS PROGRAMMING WAS UNABLE TO KEEP US WITH ATC'S LAST MIN DEMANDS. I DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT AND LEVELED OFF AT FL280. LEVELOFF TRANSITION TOPPED OFF ABOVE FL280 BY ABOUT 200 FT. RECOMMEND ATC BE INSTRUCTED ON PRACTICAL LIMITS OF MODERN HIGH TECH ACFT AND PLAN ACCORDINGLY.
