Narrative:
We were expecting to taxi to runway 12R and were pushed facing in the direction to taxi to runway 12R. Ground gave us the winds and runway 21. We discussed whether we could accept that runway and were able to. Ground assumed that we were facing in a direction to taxi to runway 21 via taxiway Q. We assumed that ground knew we were facing the opposite direction. Ground cleared us to taxi to runway 21 and due to confusion and lost situational awareness, we inadvertently crossed runway 3/21 in order to taxi to runway 21 via taxiway T then taxiway north. Ground then asked why we weren't on taxiway Q and we replied that we hadn't been given taxiway Q to runway 21. Ground then told us to continue to runway 21. Neither the captain nor the first officer was familiar with the way things are done at sat.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WDB CAPT INADVERTENTLY TAXIED ACROSS ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC WHEN TAXI OUT FOR TKOF DUE TO A MIND SET THAT THE ASSIGNED RWY WAS OTHER THAN THE ONE TO WHICH HE WAS CLRED.
Narrative: WE WERE EXPECTING TO TAXI TO RWY 12R AND WERE PUSHED FACING IN THE DIRECTION TO TAXI TO RWY 12R. GND GAVE US THE WINDS AND RWY 21. WE DISCUSSED WHETHER WE COULD ACCEPT THAT RWY AND WERE ABLE TO. GND ASSUMED THAT WE WERE FACING IN A DIRECTION TO TAXI TO RWY 21 VIA TXWY Q. WE ASSUMED THAT GND KNEW WE WERE FACING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. GND CLRED US TO TAXI TO RWY 21 AND DUE TO CONFUSION AND LOST SITUATIONAL AWARENESS, WE INADVERTENTLY CROSSED RWY 3/21 IN ORDER TO TAXI TO RWY 21 VIA TXWY T THEN TXWY N. GND THEN ASKED WHY WE WEREN'T ON TXWY Q AND WE REPLIED THAT WE HADN'T BEEN GIVEN TXWY Q TO RWY 21. GND THEN TOLD US TO CONTINUE TO RWY 21. NEITHER THE CAPT NOR THE FO WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE WAY THINGS ARE DONE AT SAT.
