Narrative:
Departed toa airport. When above class D airspace, called socal approach for VFR flight following and the necessary class B handling. Socal was very busy. I climbed above sna class C airspace and headed toward sna awaiting socal. Socal gave me a squawk and told to identify. I then turned on course without being idented and cleared through class B airspace. Several more idents were requested as I climbed and leveled off at 7500 ft. Upon being idented, the controller asked me if I knew I had penetrated class B without a clearance. I said I thought I had (which apparently I hadn't). Socal said they had to vector an air carrier out of my way. Very embarrassing. Why? Because I am an airline captain (26 yrs), a flight instructor (31 yrs), and had a GPS on board.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LA25 PLT CLBS THROUGH LAX CLASS B AIRSPACE WITHOUT SCT APCH CTLR AFTER AVOIDING SNA CLASS C AIRSPACE.
Narrative: DEPARTED TOA ARPT. WHEN ABOVE CLASS D AIRSPACE, CALLED SOCAL APCH FOR VFR FLT FOLLOWING AND THE NECESSARY CLASS B HANDLING. SOCAL WAS VERY BUSY. I CLBED ABOVE SNA CLASS C AIRSPACE AND HEADED TOWARD SNA AWAITING SOCAL. SOCAL GAVE ME A SQUAWK AND TOLD TO IDENT. I THEN TURNED ON COURSE WITHOUT BEING IDENTED AND CLRED THROUGH CLASS B AIRSPACE. SEVERAL MORE IDENTS WERE REQUESTED AS I CLBED AND LEVELED OFF AT 7500 FT. UPON BEING IDENTED, THE CTLR ASKED ME IF I KNEW I HAD PENETRATED CLASS B WITHOUT A CLRNC. I SAID I THOUGHT I HAD (WHICH APPARENTLY I HADN'T). SOCAL SAID THEY HAD TO VECTOR AN ACR OUT OF MY WAY. VERY EMBARRASSING. WHY? BECAUSE I AM AN AIRLINE CAPT (26 YRS), A FLT INSTRUCTOR (31 YRS), AND HAD A GPS ON BOARD.
